State Champion Pulls Out its First Season Win
By: Alli Lake and Abby Kirk
October 2007
Dry Ridge KY—Flags spinning,
brass blaring, beads of sweat dripping down ever face: this was the
picture of nine bands on Saturday, September 22nd. Each was working
hard to try and win that 6 foot tall 1st place trophy. For one band,
all those hours of practice paid off.
The Lafayette High School Marching Band is known for their
excellence. The 2006 Class 5A State Champions swept the awards
Saturday, claiming Best Auxiliary, Best Percussion, Best Music, and
Best Overall Effect, as well as the Grand Champion Title. 1st runner
up was won by Beechwood High school, who would’ve won the Spirit
Award if one had been given out. “They cheered wildly for every
band, every award,” said one Lafayette Band member. “They are
amazing.”
“Heck yeah they are,” added a color guard nearby. “Their show was
crazy. I’m glad they did well.”
There had been worry that the Lafayette Band would not perform well,
due to shaky practices. One instructor was even hoping for a 2nd or
3rd place trophy. “Maybe then they’ll wake up and learn they’re not
invincible.”
The winning show, entitled Celestial Suite: Sun, Moon, and Stars,
consists of three movements. The first movement, Sun, is full of
well known quotes from sun-related songs, such as “Here Comes the
Sun” and “Don’t Let the Sun Come Down on Me”. The music is fun and
energetic, just like the flags and dancers. It looks like the whole
band is having the time of their lives.
The second movement, Moon, is a ballad quoting “Clair de Lune” and
“Moonlight Sonata”. The impact moment during Saturday’s finals
performance felt like it came out of nowhere, blasting emotion into
the crowd. This passionate movement peaks when one brave dancer gets
lifted into the air and falls back into the silence.
The music picks up again in the third movement with a delightful
interpretation of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”, including a drill
formation in the shape of a star. It was a great end to the saucy
show and they kept the energy going until the final horns down.
The band was thrilled to learn that they had received a qualifying
score for the state competition, and a Distinguished rating.
Beechwood Band also received a Distinguished.
