Downtown Gallery Hop
By: Katie Aldrich
February 10, 2008
Lexington attractions usually consist of horse racing or UK
basketball, however, a popular event that occurs five times a year,
the Downtown Gallery Hop, is drawing plenty of visitors. Now in its
second decade, the gallery hop is a hospitable and fun event for the
family, art lovers, and art connoisseurs. It gives local artists a
chance to present their works to the public and draw crowds to the
usually empty downtown area.
The Gallery Hop is not hard to find, just go downtown. Parking is
easily found in numerous garages and lots and the usual cost is
anywhere from 3 to 7 dollars. For first timers, it’s easiest to
start ones journey at the Explorium in Victorian Square. From there,
find a free pamphlet with color coded map and walk endlessly around
the city. Most galleries are located within five blocks from each
other, so the walk is manageable for the young and old.
The hop displays visual artworks ranging from modern paintings,
impressionism, hand carved furniture, and metal work. Although it is
hosted by the Lexington Fine Arts Council, private galleries open
their doors to the public as well. Some artists, like the Bluegrass
Printmakers, may even create their art live in front of viewers.
Many studios and non-profits that engage in the hop also offer
classes on their art, but space is limited.
The art is great, but the price is better, it’s free! All galleries
offer free food and drinks ranging from grape juice and coke to
cheese and crackers that keeps your taste buds tingling while you
gawk at the amazing talent of local artists. Although there is
always the price of parking, the night is inexpensive as long as you
don’t plan on purchasing an artwork. The artists are professional,
and the price tags on most pieces are hundreds to thousands of
dollars.
The Downtown Gallery Hop is a fun event that the whole family can
enjoy. The next hop is February 15th from 5:00-8:00 PM, but closing
times do vary. Whether you are an art expert or a first time
explorer, the galleries have something that everyone enjoys.
