The Domination of Blu-ray

New technology is revealed everyday, but with new advancements come
bigger and bigger price tags. The most innovative piece of
technology to sweep the world today is blu-ray, a special disc that
needs a special DVD player to display stunning images that crumble
high definition. The price for a blu-ray disc is currently around
$30 and the players about $500, but is this heavy price tag worth
the extra megapixels?
Normal discs and DVD players are read and created using a red laser.
Compared to blu-ray which uses, what else, a blue laser, the red
laser has a larger wavelength which decreases the amount of space on
a disc. Blu-ray discs can hold up to 50GB of storage, which in turn
allows for pristine picture quality. The blu-ray disc can also be
read forward or backward which means that it is compatible with
DVD’s and CD’s.
Unfortunately, whether consumers can
afford them or not, entertainment and movie companies are beginning
a fairly hasty switch to blu-ray. Seven of the eight major movie
studios (Disney, Fox, Warner, Paramount, Sony, Lionsgate and MGM)
are making equal amounts of blu-ray discs as normal DVDs, and six of
them (Disney, Fox, Sony, Warner, Lionsgate and MGM) are also making
some of their movies exclusively in blu-ray format. This means that
although consumers don’t have to buy a blu-ray player to actually
view the movie, they do have to purchase the more expensive discs,
with no change in quality if watched on regular players.
Blu-ray appears to have a monopoly on the
video disc market. So many studios are supporting the change in
technological advancements that the opinion of a majority of
consumers is not taken into account. However, the picture quality of
blu-ray is superb and the prices will eventually decrease. So, in
the end, it’s a matter of preference and technological savvy, but as
for me, high definition works just fine.
